What is dyscalculia?
Dyscalculia is a specific learning difference that affects how the brain understands quantity, number relationships, and mathematical procedures. It is roughly as common as dyslexia, affecting an estimated 3 to 7 percent of learners, and it is identified far less often because math struggle is so easily mistaken for laziness, carelessness, or simply not being a math person.
What dyscalculia actually is
Most people carry an intuitive sense of quantity. Shown two handfuls of coins, they know which is larger without counting. That approximate number system is the foundation everything else in math is built on: counting, place value, fact fluency, fractions, estimation, and eventually algebra.
In dyscalculia, that foundation is unreliable. Numbers behave less like quantities and more like arbitrary symbols to be memorized. That is why drilling facts so often fails: the learner is being asked to memorize answers to questions that have no meaning yet. It is a processing difference, not a measure of intelligence or effort, and it frequently runs in families.
It is also not the same as a gap in instruction. A learner who missed a year of school and fell behind catches up quickly with good teaching. A learner with dyscalculia does not, because the difficulty is in how quantity itself is processed.
Signs of dyscalculia by stage
Early years
Counts every object one by one, cannot say which of two small groups has more, does not connect the numeral 5 to five things.
Elementary
Finger counting long after peers stop, math facts never stick, place value confusion, cannot estimate whether an answer is reasonable.
Middle school
Fractions, ratios, and percents feel arbitrary, relies on memorized rules without understanding, visible avoidance at the start of math class.
Teens and adults
Avoids money, tips, measurement, and deadlines, cannot estimate time or cost, strong verbally but blocked by any numeric task.

Dyscalculia, dyslexia, and math anxiety
Dyslexia affects the processing of written language; dyscalculia affects the processing of number. They can occur together, and when they do, word problems become doubly hard because the reading and the math both cost effort.
Math anxiety is a separate thing again: a fear response that narrows working memory exactly when the learner needs it most. Dyscalculia usually produces math anxiety over time, which is why the two are so often confused. If a learner freezes at the sight of a worksheet but reasons fluently out loud with objects in hand, anxiety is doing much of the damage, and addressing it changes performance quickly.
How dyscalculia is identified
A formal evaluation typically comes from a school psychologist or educational diagnostician and looks at cognitive processing, math achievement well below expectation, and whether the pattern persists despite good instruction. In the United States it usually appears in an evaluation as a specific learning disability in mathematics.
Keep two things in mind. First, you do not need a diagnosis to start helping: the instructional approach that works for dyscalculia helps any struggling math learner. Second, a diagnosis does unlock formal accommodations through an IEP or 504 plan, so it is worth pursuing if the difficulty is persistent.
What actually helps
Build quantity before procedure
Number sense comes first. Ten-frames, dot cards, number lines, and physical objects give the abstract steps something to attach to.
Go multisensory every time
See it, touch it, say it, write it. Concrete to visual to abstract, in that order, with the concrete stage never skipped.
Fewer problems, more depth
Ten problems done with understanding beat fifty done in panic. Keep page layouts identical so working memory goes to the math, not the format.
Separate math from speed
Timed drills mostly measure anxiety in these learners. Remove the clock and accuracy usually improves within weeks.
Protect the identity
"I'm not a math person" is the most expensive belief a learner can pick up. Name the learning difference, and make the difficulty about wiring rather than worth.
Accommodate without removing reasoning
Calculators, reference sheets, and extra time carry the arithmetic load so the learner can still do the thinking.

At what age can dyscalculia be identified?
Warning signs show up as early as kindergarten with counting, subitizing, and comparing quantities. Formal identification usually happens in grades 2 through 4, when fact fluency and place value expose the gap, but you do not need a diagnosis to start intervention.
