Dyscalculia vs dyslexia
Dyslexia and dyscalculia are siblings, not twins. Both are specific learning differences, both are roughly as common as each other, and both respond to the same style of teaching. But they affect different systems, show up in different moments, and need different content, which is why one label is never a substitute for the other.

Why they overlap
Learning differences cluster. The same families, and often the same learner, show more than one, and several shared cognitive systems, working memory, processing speed, and language for symbols, sit underneath both reading and math. That is why a child identified with dyslexia deserves a look at number sense too, and vice versa.
Word problems are where the overlap becomes obvious. Reading the problem consumes effort, holding the sentence in mind consumes more, and by the time the numbers arrive there is little capacity left for the math. A learner can look far weaker at math than they actually are for purely reading reasons, so it is worth testing: read the problem aloud to them and see what changes.
How to tell which you are seeing
Read the problem aloud
If accuracy jumps when someone else reads the text, reading is the bottleneck. If it stays flat, the math itself is.
Strip out the words entirely
Give the same operation with objects or a number line and no text. Comfort here alongside failure on the written version points to reading; difficulty in both points to number sense.
Check estimation
Ask whether an answer is "about right" without calculating. Learners with dyscalculia usually cannot tell; strong readers with dyslexia often can.

What is the main difference between dyscalculia and dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a difficulty processing written language, especially the sounds that letters represent. Dyscalculia is a difficulty processing quantity and number relationships. One affects decoding words, the other affects making sense of numbers.
Can a person have both dyscalculia and dyslexia?
Yes, and it is common. Estimates of overlap range widely, but a substantial share of learners identified with one show signs of the other. When both are present, word problems are especially hard because reading and math each consume effort.
Is dyscalculia just dyslexia with numbers?
No. They are distinct learning differences with different underlying processing profiles. Reversing digits is not the core of dyscalculia the way decoding is central to dyslexia; the core of dyscalculia is an unreliable sense of quantity.
Which is more common?
Both are estimated at roughly 3 to 7 percent of learners, so they are comparably common. Dyslexia is identified far more often, because schools screen for reading systematically and rarely screen for number sense at all.
Do the same teaching methods work for both?
The principles transfer: explicit instruction, multisensory practice, careful sequencing, lots of repetition, and no reliance on speed. The content differs completely, so a learner with both needs structured literacy for reading and structured number-sense work for math.
Which should be addressed first if a child has both?
Address both at once where possible. If resources force a choice, reading support usually comes first because reading gates access to every other subject, but math support should not be delayed for years while reading is remediated.
