Teaching fractions when numbers already feel slippery

Fractions arrive in school right around the time a student with dyscalculia has finally made peace with whole numbers. Just as the idea of seven starts to feel solid, math announces that numbers can be cut into pieces, that one-half is bigger than one-third, and that the same amount can be called two-fourths or one-half depending on the day. It is no surprise that fractions are the point where many struggling learners decide math is simply not for them. It does not have to go that way.
The first fix is physical. A fraction should be something a child folds, cuts, or breaks before it is ever something they write. Fold a paper strip in half and label it. Fold another into thirds and hold the two side by side. Suddenly the counterintuitive truth, that a bigger bottom number means a smaller piece, is not a rule to memorize. It is something the child can see with their own eyes, because they made it themselves.
Language matters more than notation at the start. Say "one-fourth" as "one out of four equal pieces" every single time, even when it gets tedious. The phrase carries the meaning the symbol compresses. A student who can say what a fraction means in plain words will eventually read the notation correctly. A student who only memorized the symbol is one confusing worksheet away from losing the whole idea.
Watch for the equal pieces trap. Many children genuinely believe that cutting a cookie into four pieces always gives you fourths, whether or not the pieces are the same size. Before any fraction work, spend time on the word equal. Sort pictures of fair and unfair shares. This tiny detour prevents weeks of confusion later, because the entire definition of a fraction rests on it.
Keep equivalent fractions concrete for as long as the child needs it. Two-fourths of a folded strip and one-half of an identical strip can be laid on top of each other and seen to match. Number fraction families on paper plates, in measuring cups, and with LEGO bricks before asking a child to multiply the top and bottom by the same number. The procedure makes sense only after the idea has a picture.
Finally, be patient with mixed feelings. Fractions are genuinely hard, and a learner with dyscalculia is working with less margin, not less ability. Fewer problems, more folding and talking, and permission to use the paper strip on every single assignment will carry a child through. Understanding built on things they can see and touch does not wash away the night before the test.
