Every mind learns differently. We think that's worth celebrating.
By Every Mind Learning Press Drs Laurie Wellner and Kathleen Pierce-Friedman
Every Mind Learning Press was founded on a simple belief: every learner deserves to be understood, not just taught. Whether you're a parent, an educator, a specialist, or someone who has spent years wondering why math never quite "clicked" the way it seemed to for everyone else, this is a space built for you.
We're starting this blog with a topic close to our hearts, one that captures exactly why this work matters: dyscalculia.
A learning difference hiding in plain sight
Here's something that might surprise you. Dyscalculia - a specific learning difference that affects the ability to understand numbers and math concepts - is estimated to affect a meaningful share of students. It's just as common as dyslexia, a term most of us know well and that many schools are equipped to screen for.
3-7%
of students are estimated to have dyscalculia
=
as common as dyslexia, yet far less often identified in schools
Yet dyscalculia rarely gets the same attention. Most schools don't have a clear plan for identifying it, and many wonderful, dedicated teachers were simply never trained to recognize its signs. It's not a gap in caring. It's a gap in awareness, and awareness is something we can absolutely change together.
The quiet story happening in classrooms right now
Think about a typical classroom. Statistically, at least one student in that room is likely struggling with dyscalculia. And without the right information, here's the story that student may be quietly telling herself:
"I'm just not a math person. Everyone else gets this. Maybe I'm just not smart enough."
These are heartbreaking conclusions for any child to draw about themselves, especially when they're not true. What that student actually has is not a lack of effort, intelligence, or potential. She has an identifiable, well-understood learning difference - one that, with the right teaching approach, responds beautifully.
That last part is the good news, and it's the reason this press exists.
Why we're hopeful
Understanding dyscalculia changes everything. When educators and families know what to look for, they can:
Recognize the signs early
Instead of watching a child struggle in silence for years.
Reframe the narrative
From "bad at math" to "learns math differently."
Access the right tools
Strategies designed to teach numbers in ways that truly connect.
Restore confidence
Often the single most powerful ingredient in a student's success.
A learning difference is not a ceiling. It's simply a different starting point, one that, with the right map, can lead to genuine understanding and even genuine enjoyment of math.

Why counting on fingers for math is just fine
Finger counting is not a crutch. It is a sensible, sensory way to hold numbers steady while the brain does the rest of the work.
