What dyscalculia actually looks like in the classroom

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difference in number sense, not a gap in effort or attention. A student may read fluently, argue a point beautifully, and still be unable to hold the quantity of seven in mind long enough to compare it to nine.
In practice it often shows up as finger counting well past the early grades, difficulty estimating, trouble recalling basic facts even after drilling, and a shaky sense of place value. Word problems can feel impossible not because the language is hard, but because the numbers keep slipping.
The instructional response is concrete before abstract, every time. Ten-frames, number lines, and physical grouping build the mental images that fact drills assume are already there. Progress comes from fewer problems done more deeply, with generous white space and predictable page layouts.
Most importantly, name it kindly. Students who understand their own learning profile stop believing they are bad at thinking, and start believing they need a different route to the same destination.
